March 17, 2022

A professional resume assures you that your application can stand out from the competition.

Sometimes writing a resume can be an overwhelming task. You must pay attention and choose the right keywords, skills, format, profile, achievements, and this is because the resume is a valuable marketing tool to show your potential employer what value you can bring to their company.

Resumes show character, personality, and abilities. They prove what makes you the best candidate, so you should write it with the future in mind, so the people who are reading it can see you doing the job.

Create a unique selling proposition, show them your achievements and skills and what they would do for the company you are applying to. Prove them that you are the best at what they are looking for.

Today more than ever, writing a resume is more complex than telling a simple story about “who are you?”, “What have you done?”, “What makes you special?”, “Why should they hire you?” Writing a resume is a process that needs time, organization, and commitment to your future.

Words have more power today than ever. Most of the time resumes go through an Applicant Tracking System called ATS, which searches for specific keywords. If you learn to tailor your career story based on those keywords, your resume may end up at the top of the candidate stack.

It turns out it is easier said than done, but the reality is that today you not only need to write your resume for people, but you also need to write it for machines too.

How does it work? The system analyzes and classifies each resume according to the use of specified keywords and identifies those resumes that best suit the selection parameters set by employers, allowing them to see only the best job applications chosen based on these pre-selected keywords for each position.

It is especially important to carefully read the job application several times; in the description, the potential employer is giving you keys about who is the right candidate for the position.

Look for phrases or words that are important to describe the function, also look for patterns or repetitions, pay attention to superlatives and adjectives.

Start with the default keywords for the role, then identify the words and phrases repeated the most in the job description. Finally, write a list and include them in order of importance throughout your resume.

When you are making your application, the system imports the data from your resume to an online profile, so look for specific headings and formatting structures. This is the time to use a simple template with standard headings such as Experience or Work History, Education, Certificates.

The goal of formatting a resume is to create an easy-to-read document and help it get successfully processed through ATS system reviews, so avoid:

  • Tables
  • Columns
  • Graphics
  • Textboxes
  • Abbreviations
  • Acronyms
  • Non-standard bullets
  • Strange fonts (check the list of ATS approved fonts) · Additional spaces between words

Always use both the month and the year when you write the dates and choose the appropriate font size and margins.

Finally, you may have heard that sending a PDF resume is the safest way to do it, but we have news, ATS systems sometimes have difficulty decoding PDF resumes. The default file format should be Word it is the safest way to send your document without problems.

Writing a winning resume does not have to be a daunting task, like any other marketing tool you need a strategy that supports your job aspirations and gives your potential employer enough information to decide to interview you and be one step closer to getting your dream job.
